Q. How often should I have a cleaning and exam?
Every six months suits most patients. Some people need to come more often — those with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or certain medical conditions. Dr. Gifford will recommend an interval based on what he actually sees in your mouth.
Q. It has been years since my last visit. Is that a problem?
It is not a problem and it is more common than you might think. There is no lecture. We take a look, explain what we find, and work out a plan with you — often in stages if there is a lot to address.
Q. Does a cleaning hurt?
For most patients a routine cleaning is not painful, though it can be uncomfortable if your gums are inflamed or there is significant buildup. Tell your hygienist if you feel discomfort. If dental anxiety is the barrier, ask us about nitrous oxide, which can be used even for a cleaning.
Important Terms
- Plaque – A soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly on teeth. It can be removed by brushing and flossing, but hardens if left in place.
- Tartar (Calculus) – Plaque that has hardened onto the tooth surface. It cannot be brushed away and must be removed professionally with instruments.
- Prophylaxis – The clinical name for a routine professional cleaning of the teeth above and just below the gumline.
- Preventative Dentistry – Care aimed at stopping dental disease from developing, rather than treating it after the fact — cleanings, exams, sealants, fluoride and home hygiene.
