About General Dentistry

Helping our patients maintain a healthy mouth and smile is the main goal of general dentistry. We prefer to provide more minor, preventive care than to see patients suffer with more intensive treatments from a problem that was not managed in time. We want to ensure that your oral health is in its optimal state and positively contributing to the health of your entire body. We are here to brighten your smile and pave the way for a brighter life.

Why Routine Care Is Worth It

Almost every major dental problem started as a minor one. Decay that needs a root canal was once a cavity that needed a filling; a tooth that needs extraction was often saveable a year earlier. The purpose of routine care is to intervene while the answer is still simple. That is also why the practice leans toward preventive treatment over intensive treatment. Fewer appointments, less cost, less discomfort, and more of your own tooth structure kept intact. Oral health also does not stay in the mouth. Chronic gum inflammation and untreated infection have effects on general health, which is part of why we look at gums and soft tissue as carefully as we look at teeth.

What Care Here Looks Like

Appointments are not rushed. Dr. Gifford's approach is to explain what he sees, why it matters and what the options are — including when the option is to watch something rather than treat it immediately. If you are anxious about dental work, say so when you book. Sedation is available, from nitrous oxide during a routine filling through to oral conscious sedation for longer visits, and Dr. Gifford has particular experience with patients who have had difficult dental experiences before. Call (480) 581-7681 to arrange a visit. New patients are welcome, and we accept most PPO insurance plans, with financing available through Cherry and CareCredit.

FAQs About General Dentistry in San Tan Valley, AZ

Q. How often should I have a cleaning and exam?

Every six months suits most patients. Some people need to come more often — those with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or certain medical conditions. Dr. Gifford will recommend an interval based on what he actually sees in your mouth.

Q. It has been years since my last visit. Is that a problem?

It is not a problem and it is more common than you might think. There is no lecture. We take a look, explain what we find, and work out a plan with you — often in stages if there is a lot to address.

Q. Does a cleaning hurt?

For most patients a routine cleaning is not painful, though it can be uncomfortable if your gums are inflamed or there is significant buildup. Tell your hygienist if you feel discomfort. If dental anxiety is the barrier, ask us about nitrous oxide, which can be used even for a cleaning.

Important Terms

  • PlaqueA soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly on teeth. It can be removed by brushing and flossing, but hardens if left in place.
  • Tartar (Calculus)Plaque that has hardened onto the tooth surface. It cannot be brushed away and must be removed professionally with instruments.
  • ProphylaxisThe clinical name for a routine professional cleaning of the teeth above and just below the gumline.
  • Preventative DentistryCare aimed at stopping dental disease from developing, rather than treating it after the fact — cleanings, exams, sealants, fluoride and home hygiene.
