Q. How often do I need dental X-rays?
Only when there is a reason. That depends on your decay risk, gum health and history rather than a fixed schedule. Some patients need them yearly, others considerably less often. Dr. Gifford will explain why any particular image is being taken.
Q. Can you see cavities without X-rays?
Some, but not all. Decay on a surface we can see and probe is detectable visually. Decay between teeth or underneath an existing filling generally is not, and those are common locations — which is exactly the gap X-rays fill.
Q. Are dental X-rays safe?
Dental X-rays use a very small amount of radiation, and digital sensors require less than older film. Protective measures are used, and images are only taken when clinically justified. Tell us if you are or may be pregnant.
